BRIEF & USER
This project aims to address the negative impacts of traditional educational methods upon children. Those who struggle in standard education have been found to suffer from lower self-esteem, mental illness, struggle socially, earn less than their peers later on in life, and are more inclined to be drawn to criminal activity. My project will aim to combat the negative outcomes of the tough standardised education methods applied across the UK.
I want to produce an alternative education method in the style of a residential camp specifically tailored to- wards those children (aged 12-16) who struggle at standard schools. It will be based on a monthly rotationsystem, allowing a specific set of children from varying schools to attend every couple of months, where it will be treated as an outdoor learning & activity facility. This will allow the children to learn on a team work & out- door basis, using the indoor/outdoor environment that St Peters Seminary offers as its key feature.
However, as St Peters is a historical icon and thus Grade A listed, I need to make sure that whatever I produce does not take away and distract from the historical significance of the structure & the remaining skeletal ruin.
CONCEPT
My plan is to create a space that allows the children on the residential to experience outdoor learning in a safe environment, whilst also being near a warm ‘cosy’ indoor/outdoor, communal, multi-use, space. I want to incorporate the fun of camping into the design, though changing the conventions of camping outdoors in order to create a more communal open environment. I’ve taken inspiration from outdoor cinema’s, festival environments and wild camping as I believe these all appeal to my user.
